The bituminous membrane is a waterproofing material that contains different polymers. Thus, the polymer enables the bitumen membrane to differentiate itself from other waterproof insulation products. In fact, it plays a leading role by providing excellent water insulation and high resistance to the material.
In today’s article, we invite you to discover the bituminous waterproofing membrane.
What Is The Bituminous Waterproofing Membrane ?
Firstly, the bitumen, which is also known as asphalt, is a mixed substance made up of organic liquids that are highly sticky, viscous and waterproof. We use the bituminous membrane as a layer for water insulation purpose. Which means that we apply it as a waterproof foundation and cover it with concrete.
By doing so, the goal is to avoid the corrosion of the concretes. Indeed, with weather changes like rain, snow, ice … the leaking water causes the concrete to break and crack. That’s why, the bitumen membrane provides good water insulation and high resistance of the material.
Surface Options Of The Bitumen Membrane
On the other hand, the surface of the bitumen membrane is the most decisive part. In fact, when one side of the product is polyethylene coated (PE), we wonder what would be the other side. In response to this question, there are four surface options that have been created, namely:
- HDPE (High density polyethylene) film
- Slated
- Fine sand (Used in highways and tunnels because it is better applied to asphalt)
- Aluminium foil
Factors To Consider Before Applying Bitumen Membrane
On the other hand, there are some criteria to take into consideration when choosing the bituminous membrane. These are the following ones:
- Cold flexibility & low temperature: 0°; -5°; -10° or -20° C
- Surface: HDPE film, slated, fine sand or aluminium foil
- Thickness: 1-6mm
- Roll length: 10; 15 or 20 meters
- Width: 100cm
- The climate zone
Characteristics Of The Waterproofing Membrane
Even if the bituminous waterproofing membranes come in roll, they are always transported and stored upright. After that, we can easily unfold and lead the bitumen membranes on a firm and clean surface. Let’s keep in mind that before starting the application process, the surface must be prepared and free from danger.
Regarding the application methods, there are two main types :
- Torching method
By opting for the torching method, we apply the membrane by using a torch. Which means that we use a fire torch to melt the bituminous layer on the surface to bond. Serious security measures must be taken before and while using a torch.
- Cold apply (self-adhesive attribute, no torching needed)
In the cold application method, we remove the release line which covers the bituminous membrane. Then, we can easily stick the membrane thanks to its self-adhesive attribute.
Once the packaging is open, we make sure that the product is applied quickly and not left open. Likewise, if you are planning to apply the membrane during the day, we highly recommend you to use lower temperature ranges. Specifically if you are in a warm climate area. Indeed, the application performance of the product may decrease if the product is exposed to high temperatures. For instance, we may be brought to cope with issues such as dimensional changes or visual defects on the item.
Advantages Of The Self-Adhesive Method
The self-adhesive bituminous membrane is very convenient. In fact, it represents interesting features and benefits like:
- Clean and fast application
- Easy application (the membrane roll is unfold and lead on a firm surface)
- A fire torch is not needed at all
- Safe application (no torch or other hazardous material are required)
- No open flame
- 100% ultraviolet (UV) protected
Safety Tips Of The Bituminous Membrane
Regardless of the application method chosen, we invite you to seek help from qualified teams and professional staff. Whether you are experienced or not with the product, people who have acquired the technical knowledge and occupational training in this matter will ensure safe and successful application. Under these circumstances, you can unquestionably prevent applications errors and avoid fire accidents while using flammable materials and equipments.
Application Of The Bitumen Membrane
The bitumen membrane is applied to waterproof surfaces. Therefore, its filed of application are various and can be stated as below:
- Asphalts roads
- Below ground structures
- Highways
- Bridges
- Viaducts
- Tunnels
- Water tanks
- Foundations of buildings
- Flat roofs
- Concrete roofs
- External walls
- Basements
- Pools
- Gardens
- Terraces
- Balconies
Storage Of The Bitumen Membrane
Regarding the storage, membrane pallets are covered by UV resistant white shrinks. They must be stored and transported upright and never on top of each other. Any heavy loads shouldn’t be placed on the pallets.
On the other hand, it is important to note that the bituminous membranes must be stored indoors where they are far away from sun and air conditions. That’s why, a room temperature above +5° C is highly recommended.
Finally, shelf-life of not-opened bituminous membranes is 12 months. Above this date, the performance of the membrane is diminishing.
